ECNP invites applications from ECNP Network members, Committee members, and Early Career Academy members to participate in the ECNP GALENOS Workshop on circadian disruption, taking place in Amsterdam on 24–25 January 2027.
About the Workshop
Sleep and circadian disturbances are increasingly recognised as important contributors to depressive and bipolar disorders. Emerging evidence suggests that disruptions in circadian biology may represent causal and modifiable mechanisms, offering new opportunities for the development of targeted biological and pharmacological interventions.
However, important questions remain regarding the underlying mechanisms, periods of vulnerability across the lifespan, approaches for patient stratification, and the translation of scientific findings into effective treatments.
Building on the GALENOS Living Systematic Review on Circadian Dysregulation in Mood Disorders, this workshop will bring together leading experts to critically evaluate the current evidence from human and animal studies, identify key knowledge gaps, and define priorities for future research.
The Workshop will also address the important question of what evidence is still needed to establish whether circadian disruption plays a causal role in mood symptoms and disorders and how this knowledge can be translated into clinical advances.
Workshop aims
The Workshop will focus on:
- Understanding the potential causal and modifiable role of sleep and circadian disruption in depressive and bipolar disorders across developmental stages and adulthood;
- Identifying biologically informed approaches for patient stratification and treatment selection;
- Exploring opportunities for targeted and personalised biological and pharmacological interventions;
- Defining priorities for future research, cross-sector collaboration, and clinical translation.
Format and participants
Organised in collaboration with the Wellcome, the Workshop will bring together approximately 25 international experts from neuroscience, psychiatry, sleep medicine, circadian science, translational research, the pharmaceutical industry, and lived experience perspectives.
Through short scientific presentations, interactive discussions, and cross-disciplinary exchange, participants will work together to develop a forward-looking research roadmap for the field and identify opportunities to accelerate the discovery of personalised interventions for mood disorders.
How to apply
ECNP invites interested members the from ECNP Networks, Committees, and Early Career Academy to apply here by submitting:
• A motivational letter (max. one A4 page)
• A short CV (max. two A4 pages)
The deadline to apply is 1 September 2026.
Review outcome
Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the selection process by the end of October 2026.
