Anxiety Disorders Research Network

An international, cross-disciplinary collaborative group dedicated to addressing unmet needs in anxiety and related disorders. By harmonising research and clinical databases, refining research methodologies, and evaluating innovative interventions, particularly for neglected patient groups, the Network strives to improve understanding and treatment of these conditions. The Network aims to establish a platform for pragmatic randomised controlled effectiveness trials, advancing the field of anxiety disorders.

History

The Anxiety Disorders Research Network (ADRN) was founded at an inaugural meeting in Paris in May 2008, In 2010 the ADRN published a manifesto paper outlining the network’s aims and objectives, and in 2017, it released two influential consensus statements on biomarkers in anxiety disorders. In 2024 the network published a Delphi expert consensus guideline paper on the definition of treatment resistance anxiety disorders. From 2023-2024 the network was one of the first to design and conduct an ECNP course consisting of colloquia, on-line webinars and an assessed dissertation on Anxiety Disorders. The network continues to prioritise collaborative research on neurobiological factors, clinical outcomes, and treatment responses across diverse patient groups. The network is currently led by Simon Davies (chair) and Miriam Schiele (co-chair) and benefits from the continued participation of our three previous chairs, David Baldwin (UK), Borwin Bandelow (Germany) and Katharina Domschke (Germany).

Our Network organised a targeted meeting on “anxiety disorders across the lifespan”, held immediately after the ECNP 2018 Congress in Barcelona. More recently, we have published a Delphi Consensus paper on definitions of Treatment Resistance in Anxiety Disorders in World Journal of Psychiatry (2024) and continue to work on further collaborative papers. We have arranged academic symposia on anxiety disorders at the BAP and ECNP Congresses in 2023. We have a further symposium accepted for ECNP Munich 2026 entitled “Innovative approaches to understanding and treating anxiety disorders; from neurobiology to cutting edge therapies”. We have published over 30 papers with two or more Anxiety Disorders Research Network members in 2024 and 2025, examples of which are listed below
