The Early Career Academy (ECA) is a vibrant initiative that offers Early Career Scientists a dedicated space within ECNP, fostering long-term engagement and supporting professional growth.
Now in its third year, the academy continues to grow. Each year, 20 new early career members are selected to join the ECA, with membership lasting five years. This annual intake will continue, and at full capacity, the academy will house around 100 members. As cohorts complete their five-year term, new members will be welcomed, ensuring a dynamic and evolving community.
The ECA is guided by the ECA Board, which ensures the academy remains a supportive, inspiring, and forward-thinking environment for emerging researchers.
ECA member benefits
The opportunity to apply for a temporary position within one of ECNP’s Networks, enabling active participation and contribution to their initiatives. Please be aware that a seat in one of the ECNP Networks is not guaranteed and depends, among other things on the Network’s availability
An annual in-person meeting held at the ECNP Congress, allowing face-to-face interactions and the opportunity to engage with peers and experts in the field
Each year, two ECA members are selected to join the Scientific Programme Committee (SPC), contributing the early career perspective to help shape the ECNP Congress programme
Organise events and invite expert scientist to participate
Obtain education on career development and writing grant applications
Invited by ECNP to actively participate in the ECNP Congress programme, or to participate in ECNP initiatives like the ECNP Podcasts and writing commentaries for ECNP’s journals
Meet peers in the same and other fields of interest
Application requirements
The Early Career Academy provides a springboard for Early Career Scientists who have gained several years of professional experience, have already participated in ECNP events, and are now advancing towards their mid-career stage.
- There is no age requirement
- 2-7 years after obtaining a PhD degree or 3-9 years into MD specialization, whichever comes first
- Must be resident in Europe*
- An active participant in at least two ECNP events (e.g., presenter at the ECNP Congress or participant at ECNP Workshops/Courses)
- At least one first-author publication
- Be a member/associate member of ECNP or engaged to become one
*Europe being the 46 countries of the Council of Europe plus Israel.
The four activity-based interest groups
The ECNP Early Career Academy has established four interest groups to foster collaboration, innovation, and professional growth among early career researchers in the field of applied neuroscience. These groups provide a platform for Academy members to explore shared interests, develop new initiatives, and contribute to ECNP's broader mission of advancing science and education in mental health.
Each group is chaired by an ECA board member and focuses on a distinct thematic area, their common goal is to empower the next generation of researchers through knowledge exchange, skill-building, and community engagement. These are the four groups:
1. Education and outreach
This group is focused on supporting educational opportunities and science communication within the ECNP community. The group will play an active role in contributing to ECNP’s educational and scientific activities, including online courses, the Brains-on-Brains podcast series, blog posts summarising significant research findings, and commentaries in the ECNP journals.
To further support researchers, the group may also deliver online training sessions designed to enhance skills in effective science communication. These sessions will address critical topics such as strategies for engaging with the public via social media and debunking misinformation, thereby helping researchers to communicate their work clearly and responsibly to both academic and non-specialist audiences.
2. Evidence and methodology
This group is dedicated to advancing research practices by promoting evidence-based methodologies and encouraging a culture of transparency and replicability in science. The group focuses on generating new evidence, developing and discussing methodological guidelines, and addressing common research design and analysis challenges.
Group activities may include meta-research projects on topics of shared interest and exploring the ethical and philosophical research aspects. To enhance researchers' skills, the group may contribute to workshops on methodology by offering sessions on statistical approaches, study designs, or the application of innovative techniques. Additional topics may include strategies for improving data reporting, handling reproducibility challenges, and navigating open science practices.
3. Translation
This group is a platform for fostering bidirectional collaboration and knowledge exchange between preclinical and clinical scientists. The aim is to address shared challenges and explore innovative approaches to strengthen translational neuroscience research and improve the flow of knowledge between the lab and the clinic and vice versa.
Group activities may include writing a review paper on translation, back-translation and major issues in the field, involvement in ECNP’s initiatives at the Congress to foster translation, and hosting virtual seminars with experts in translational neuroscience. The group may also be a platform to explore innovations in neuroscience research methods, and match clinical and preclinical scientists to collaborate in emerging translational projects.
4. Career development
This group is dedicated to supporting early career researchers and those transitioning into leadership roles, such as group leaders or principal investigators. It aims to address key challenges through activities like webinars, presentations, and mentorship programs. Topics will include securing grants, interviewing for faculty positions, hiring and managing personnel, supporting mental health and well-being, and navigating the transition to independent leadership roles.
The group also emphasises networking and skill development, providing structured opportunities for Early Career Academy members to connect with peers and senior mentors, fostering collaboration and professional growth. Additionally, it will evaluate the career progression of early-career researchers within ECNP networks, potentially by monitoring career trajectories, and conducting surveys to better understand their needs, struggles, and expectations.
ECA is now recruiting new members!
We would warmly like to invite early careers across the entire spectrum of research orientations to apply: pre-clinical, translational and clinical scientists are welcome!
How to apply
You will be requested to insert your motivation statement (max. 300 words) and Curriculum Vitae (CV, max. 2 pages). The motivation should include:
- Three key reasons for your interest in joining the ECA, along with a clear description of how you envision contributing to ECNP's mission. We encourage you to go beyond expressing what ECNP can offer you, and highlight the unique insights or initiatives you would be able to bring.
- Expression of affinity with your favourite and second favourite ECNP Networks. Please keep in mind that at this stage, you only need to select your preferred Networks, the actual selection by the Networks will happen after admittance to the ECA.
Please complete the application on or before 9 February 2026.
Follow up
The candidates are selected by the ECA board based on the application review score. The final selection will be presented to the ECNP Executive Committee for approval. All applicants will be informed of the final review outcome on or before 1 April 2026. This is also the date that the new members will start their term and will join the ECA activities. The first in-person moment of contact will be during the 39th ECNP Congress in Munich, Germany.
