Making our way to Paris

Less than four months to go until the start of the 30th ECNP Congress in Paris...

Preparations for the congress programme are in full swing. We have received over 1,300 abstracts, which are currently going through the review process for publication and presentation at the congress.

The scientific programme is almost complete, with more than 60 sessions published already, covering a wide range of topics. We will add the finishing touches in the coming weeks, by adding the last few sessions.

One of the highlights of the programme is of course our Keynote speaker, this year John Krystal, USA, on 'Targeting glutamate in psychiatric disease'

Do you know we also offer childcare at the congress venue? And if you book your flight to Paris via a SkyTeam airline, you can save 15% on your ticket!

Looking back: Nice '17

Last March our annual Workshop for Junior Scientists took place in Nice, France, ECNP's premier event for preclinical education. Over the weekend, we could again welcome 100 of Europe's top junior scientists from 23 different countries.

Together with 11 European and US speakers, they focused on the topics 'molecular and cellular', 'behavioural and systems', 'clinical neuroscience' and 'the wider shores of addiction'.

The meeting was very well received by both the junior scientists as the faculty.

ECNP New Approaches meeting

Also in Nice, right after the Workshop, ECNP hosted a special meeting on ‘New approaches to psychiatric drug development’.

This two-day meeting brought 100 leaders from academia, industry and the regulatory bodies together to tackle the challenge of connecting the clinical management of psychiatric disorders to what is becoming known about the pathophysiology of these conditions.

Over the course of the meeting, ten experts from around the world presented new perspectives on the connections between the functional processes that underlie psychiatric illness, the increasing number of potential ‘drugable’ CNS targets, and the future of psychiatric drug development and treatment.

A report of the meeting will be published in European Neuropsychopharmacology.

General Assembly of ECNP members

The General Assembly of members is ECNP's highest deliberative body and the embodiment of one of the College's most fundamental member privileges: the right to vote and help shape ECNP's future.

The next General Assembly will take place during the 30th ECNP Congress on Monday 4 September 2017 (12.15 hrs) at the Palais des Congrès de Paris.

ECNP Seminars

March also saw the year’s first Seminar, one of four planned for 2017, in Marije Bistrica, Croatia on 23-25 March.

The Seminar format allows focused training for a select number of highly promising junior scientists in an Eeastern European country.

The Marije Bistrica Seminar was led by Avi Avital (Faculty of Medicine, the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, and Emek Medical Center) and supported by Guy Goodwin (University of Oxford) and Dina Popovic (Sheba Medical Center, Tel Aviv University and University of Barcelona).

33 young Croatian scientists took part; the feedback was excellent. Special congratulations go to Anamarija Petek Eric, for winning the Seminar Award, which provides free registration to the 30th ECNP Congress and a EUR 1,000 travel grant.

The next seminar will take place on 20-22 October 2017 in Georgia.

News Media event

Are you a (senior) scientist or engineer with little or no media experience?

Are you working in a field which can provoke media controversy?

Are you interested in how the media works – and how to help journalists report your subject better?

The Science Media Centre organises an 'Introduction to the News Media' event on Monday 26th June 2017 at the Francis Crick Institute in London from 1pm to 5pm. It’s a hugely informative, entertaining and popular afternoon. And it’s FREE.

You will hear from national news science journalists about what makes a story, what drives the news agenda and what they need from you – and you will get a chance to interrogate them on what drives you mad about the media.
You will also hear from press officers working at the coal face of science communication, and from scientists who have worked with the media and lived to tell the tale.

More information is available on the Science Media Centre website.
